Pre-production prototypes are usually created using injection molding machines.
This requires the designer to use the CAD design to create an injection mold template that will be used to produce approximately 300-100 pieces.
Creating template tools is the main cost of this process (and can be a significant cost).
Pre-production prototypes are usually made of the same plastic as the final product to allow real-time testing and / or research on the product at the time of mass production (before investing the money needed for mass production).
When it comes to pre-production prototypes, it’s all about injection molding tools.
We usually recommend aluminum tools (vice steel) because it has several benefits for the entrepreneur / company.
First, although aluminum is sometimes deceived by its lack of strength, the truth is that a good aluminum tool is very strong.
Pre-production prototype cycles require only a few hundred to thousands of duplicates.
An aluminum tool will last far beyond this need and in many cases can be produced
Use several times more units if deeper testing is required before mass production.
Second, if the injection molding process reveals the required changes, the aluminum tool is much more suitable for the settings.
Adjustments may be made because of design oversight, because the tool itself creates the injection mold defect (such as uneven flow), or because product testing or consumer research indicates a defect that needs to be rectified.
In most cases, the tool (or part of the tool) can be redesigned and the injection mold cycle re-run before production until successful.
If you need to modify an aluminum device, the aluminum mold is much simpler than steel tools, although some alloys (especially the 7000 series) compare well to steel in terms of hardness.
Plastic is much cheaper than aluminum and much cheaper than steel. The only problem is that it degrades after a relatively short number of cycles in the injection molding machine. At this time, PIMT is definitely not a good alternative to aluminum tools and pre-production prototypes.
