Polyolefins

Polyolefins are a family of polyethylene and polypropylene thermoplastics.

They are mainly produced from oil and natural gas through the polymerization of ethylene and propylene, respectively.

Their versatility has made them one of the most popular plastics used today.

There are four types of polyolefins:

• LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene): LDPE is defined as a density range of 0.910-0.940 g / cm3.

It can withstand temperatures of 80 degrees Celsius continuously and 95 degrees Celsius for a short time.

Made in transparent or opaque types, it is very flexible and strong.

• LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene):
  Polyethylene is a substantial linear, with a significant number of short branches, usually made by copolymerizing ethylene with longer-chain olefins.

LLDPE has higher tensile strength and more impact and puncture resistance than LDPE.

It is very flexible and lasts under prolonged stress.

It can be used to make thin films and has good resistance to chemicals.

It has good electrical properties.

However, it is not as easy to process as LDPE.

• HDPE (High Density Polyethylene):HDPE is known for its high strength-to-density ratio.
  The density of HDPE can vary from 0.93 to 0.97 g / m3 or 970 kg / m3.

Although HDPE is only slightly denser than low-density polyethylene, HDPE has few branches, giving it stronger intermolecular forces than LDPE.

It is also harder and duller and can withstand somewhat higher temperatures (120 ° C for short periods).

• PP (polypropylene):

The density of PP is between 0.895 and 0.92 g / cm2.

Therefore, PP plastic is a product with the lowest density.

Compared to polyethylene (PE), it has superior mechanical properties and thermal resistance, but less chemical resistance.

PP is typically hard and flexible, especially when copolymerized with ethylene.

Special features of different types of polyolefins have different uses, such as:

• LDPE:
  Adhesive film, carrier bags, agricultural film, milk carton covers, power cable covers, heavy industrial bags.
• LLDPE :
  Stretch film, industrial packaging film, thin-walled containers and heavy, medium and small bags.
• HDPE :
  Boxes and crates, bottles (for food products, detergents, cosmetics), food containers, toys, gasoline tanks, packaging and industrial film, pipes and appliances.
• PP :
  Food packaging includes yogurt, margarine pots, sweet and snack packaging, anti-microwave containers, carpet fibers, garden furniture, medical packaging and supplies, suitcases, kitchen utensils and tubes.
